This set of islands and islets, with a very flat relief, is located in the Arousa estuary, at the mouth of the Ulla River. Its location inside the estuary differentiates it from the outer islands of the Park. This situation, more protected from the force of the sea and the Atlantic wind, means that its bottoms are covered with sand, which is widely used by the inhabitants of the area for the cultivation of clams and other bivalves.
Inside the island of Cortegada there is a humid forest of laurels and other native trees that surround the abandoned village and its hermitage.
On the islet of Malveira Grande, which is a reserve area, one of the few island forests of Pyrenean oak on the Atlantic coast is preserved.
You can access the Library section to consult and download more brochures and resources about the islands.
There is no regular daily transport, so visitors must contact the shipping companies that organize groups visiting this island from various ports, mainly: Vilagarcía, and Carril.
These groups must be accompanied by a guide accredited by the park in a ratio of 25 visitors per guide. The maximum daily visitor quota for the Cortegada archipelago is 150-250 people.
See the shipping companies that make trips to Cortegada at the end of this same page.
The visit can be made any day of the year, but it is necessary to have the navigation and anchoring permits issued by the National Park. The form to request navigation permission can be downloaded on this website in the section of authorizations and it also indicates the documentation that must be attached. The applications, once completed, can be sent by email, regular mail or fax to the National Park offices.
Once the navigation permission has been obtained, you can request the permissions of anchoring for those days you want to anchor in the islands.
The daily limit in this archipelago is 15-20 anchorages/day in the perimeter zone.
